Hello beer folk of the four corners. My name is Ryan Thompson and I am the new brewer at Three Rivers. I’m sure many of you know that Daniel has left to pursue higher education, and I am the lucky guy who gets to fill his boots. I would like to take a moment to tell you about myself. I am 32, married to a beautiful Indiana girl named Dreama. We have a 6 month old puppy named Royale and live in Durango. I was born and raised in northern Indiana, and it didn’t take long for me to become a big fan of craft beer. Dreama and I moved to Chicago in 2000 so I could attend film school, but found a greater passion in making beer. I attended many beer related classes at The Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago. After bugging the pub brewer at Goose Island for a job, I landed a gig as an assistant brewer. I spent several years learning the ins and outs of pub brewing, and got a chance to work at their massive production facility. In 2009 I took a job at Ska brewing and Dreama and I packed our stuff and moved to Durango. In May of this year started working with Peter and Daniel to prepare for Daniels’ departure.

So there you have it in a nutshell. If you stop by, please don’t be afraid to ask for me and say hi. I can’t wait to meet all the people who have made 3RB what it is today. So, come on down… Say hi… and lets drink some beer.

Cheers,

Ryan

The next homebrewers (and prospective homebrewers) tasting session is coming up! Here’s all the info:

What: Tasting and Judging Session of Scottish-style Ales
When: Tuesday, July 20 at 6:30 PM
Where: Three Rivers Banquet Hall – limited to the first 20 people!!!!
Contact Telephone: For more info, call Daniel Sawyer at ubru – 505/327-3000 or 505/486-4212
3RB along with Daniel Sawyer of ubru Home Brewing & Wine Making Supplies (1408 N. Hutton in Farmington) and Walter Danver will be hosting a tasting session of both homebrewed and commercial Scottish-style Ales. These are the smaller ales for which Scotland is famous, genarally known as “Scottish” Ales (as opposed to the big “Scotch” Ales, or Wee Heavies). This time around we will do a “directed judging” of the various Scottish Ales, which means we will judge these beers as a group and see how they stack up against each other. It’s a great way to learn about this classic family of beer styles and how beers are judged. Come and join us!

The next meeting of homebrewers (and prospective homebrewers) is coming up! Here’s all the info:
What: Homebrew Meeting
When: Sunday, June 6 at 4:00 PM
Where: Three Rivers Tap & Game Room Patio
Beer Style: Scottish Ales (the smaller ones, not the big Scotch Wee Heavies!)
Contact Telephone: Daniel Sawyer at ubru – 505/327-3000 or 505/486-4212

Daniel Sawyer of ubru Home Brewing & Wine Making Supplies ( 1408 N. Hutton in Farmington) will be brewing a Light 60/- (which means 60 schilling) Scottish Ale. He’ll be demonstrating how to brew from a homebrew kit using extracts (which is the best and easiest way to learn). Walter Danver, who has won numerous homebrewing awards, will be brewing an all-grain batch of Export 80/- Scottish Ale. Since it’s a longer process (essentially, Walter will be making his own extract) he’ll be starting at about 2:00 PM. For an all-grain brewing experience you should come down early and watch (and talk!) to Walter.

Either way, though, come on down and see how beer is made. And see how you can brew your own beer at home. Daniel and Walter know a lot about homebrewing and would love to share what they know. While you’re at the Tap Room, try one of 3RB’s Scottish-style ales — either the 90/- Scottish Ale or the bigger Hop Scotch Ale, whichever is pouring — or one of the 10 or 11 other beers on tap. See you then!

Three Rivers is celebrating American Craft Beer Week by helping YOU get in touch with your inner beer geek! Face it, we all have one, and the more that beer geek knows the more YOU enjoy great beer! Here’s what 3RB is doing:

1. We’ll be giving free Brewery Tours Monday-Friday. Just ask Bob Beckley or one of the brewers (Daniel or Peter) to schedule a tour.
2. The designated style for American Craft Beer Week is “Craft Beer Wheat”. So we’re bringing back our Red Mountain Wheat! Even better, it’ll only cost you $4 a pint the entire week! (That’s 75¢ off!)
3. Check out the “Declaration of Beer Independence” posters hanging in the Pub, Pizzeria, and Tap & Game Room. Better yet, SIGN IT!
4. We’ll be offering hand-outs of the “Declaration of Beer Independence” for you to take home and hang on YOUR wall!

Listen to what the Brewers Association has to say about American Craft Beer Week:

Beer lovers, craft brewers, homebrewers, beer distributors, retailers, and even U.S. Congress are all making special plans for the annual American Craft Beer Week taking place across the country May 17-23. The “Mother of All Beer Weeks”, organized by the Brewers Association, celebrates small and independent craft brewers and highlights all that America loves about craft beer. In 2006, the week became the largest national effort focusing on American craft brewers and remains so today.

A House of Representatives resolution, H.R. 1297, was introduced on April 22 to recognize and support the goals and ideals of American Craft Beer Week. This Congressional effort highlights the valuable role that small and independent craft brewers play through community citizenry, economic contributions—including the estimated 100,000 jobs in the industry–and the resurgence in a rich brewing culture not seen since before Prohibition.

So come on in and help us celebrate the best beer week in America, and see what makes the U. S. of A. the best country in the world for BEER!

This is the second GLBT dance of 2010 at the Three Rivers Banquet Hall. The first one was great, and by all indications, it looks as though this one will be even better. There will be music and games, friends new and old, and 3RB hospitality. Of course, 3RB beer will help get things rolling. So, what IS a Big Beer Gathering? We’re glad you asked. Let’s parse this baby out.

The “Big Beer” part is easy; all of the beers will be “bigger” beers. No light-weight Natty Light knock-offs or Corona clones. No sirree. These babies will be packed with flavor, and yes, a bit more alcohol than the normal stuff.

And the “Gathering” part is easy too because it’s a gathering of beers from a bunch of breweries. Think of it as a mini beer festival for all our friends in the Four Corners area and beyond. We’ll have bodacious beers from our brewing brethren north of the border as well as from our brewing buddies in ‘Burque and Rio Rancho. Carver, Durango, Pagosa, Ska, and Steamworks Breweries will be represented, as will Chama River, Il Vicino, and Marble Breweries from Albuquerque and Turtle Mountain Brewery from Rio Rancho. And, of course, 3RB’s own big, bodacious beers will be there too!

The price of admission gets you tasters of the 10 beers on tap, a glass of your favorite, and FOOD! As always with Three Rivers events, there will be loads of 3RB fun. So whether you’re Irish or not, stop by the Banquet Hall on St. Paddy’s Day for some GREAT BEER and FOOD.

NOTE: There will be NO GREEN BEER served at this event!
